The Problem:

The core challenge in male fertility assessment is the lack of reliability, reproducibility, and standardisation in semen analysis.

Current approaches often rely on manual or semi-automated processes, where results can vary between operators and laboratories (Cooper et al., 2010; Agarwal et al., 2021). In addition, many systems analyse only a small portion of a sample, which may not fully represent its overall characteristics (Tomlinson et al., 2010). These limitations can lead to inconsistent outcomes, reduced confidence in results, and delays in clinical decision-making.

There is a clear need for more consistent, objective, and scalable approaches to fertility analysis that reduce variability and improve the representativeness of data (Agarwal et al., 2021).

About Us:

78M is an early-stage engineering company focused on developing advanced diagnostic technologies at the intersection of robotics, optics, and artificial intelligence.

Our current work centres on innovating a next-generation system for fertility analysis, designed to improve the consistency, scalability, and objectivity of existing approaches, we aim to enable more comprehensive and repeatable analysis of biological samples. The company takes a first principles engineering approach, designing and developing both hardware and software in-house.

Our focus is on research and development, rapid prototyping, and validating core technologies with the goal of translating them into practical, real-world tools. We prioritise robustness, reproducibility, and thoughtful system design to ensure that what we build is not only technically sound, but ultimately useful.

78M is currently progressing through early stage development, with ongoing work dedicated to refining the prototype and demonstrating feasibility for future clinical and commercial applications.

The Founder:

My name is Jacob Ryan, and I’m an engineer with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Physics from the University of Technology Sydney.

I’m focused on applying STEM to build practical systems that improve quality of life. My work combines robotics, optics, and artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on developing complete solutions from hardware through to data and analysis.

I founded 78M to take a hands-on, engineering-led approach to developing new technologies through rapid prototyping and continuous iteration.
